BAND BIOS

MYSTIC BRAVES — Mystic Braves might be rooted in the psychedelic scene of the 1960s, but the band’s moment is happening right now. Based in Echo Park, the Braves — who are signed to influential indie label Lolipop Records — are at the forefront of a white-hot garage band revival, and when the band isn’t selling out shows across the country, they’re playing alongside legendary groups like The Zombies and Brian Jonestown Massacre or providing the soundtrack for can’t-miss fashion events like Saint Laurent Paris’ Spring-Summer 2015 collection. While the group — made up of Julian Ducatenzeiler on guitar and vocals, Tony Malacara on bass and vocals, Shane Stotsenberg on guitar and vocals, Cameron Gartung on drums and Ignacio Gonzalez on organ and tambourine — isn’t straying far from what Ducatenzeiler calls “a blend of influence and sound that is unprecedented in contemporary music”.

DEATH VALLEY GIRLS — Think of Death Valley Girls as an acid-tripping science experiment that’s been buried alive, and resurrected as a sexually liberated dystopian chain-gang. A cosmic scar, if you will, on the hills of Echo Park, where the experiment began in 2013 by proto-punk Bonnie Bloomgarden and guitarist Larry Schemel — who got lost in the desert, returned to their haunted garage in Echo Park, and pieced together their vision with shopworn images of sexploitation babes, a blood-soaked Iggy Pop, and Bloomgarden’s series of phantasms, the result of spending a year in a mental institution, where she planned her neon-glowing odyssey by listening to Black Sabbath and UFO, reading about alien conspiracy theories, and deriving her band’s moral compass from a line she saw in a movie: “Everybody’s gotta be in a gang,” from campy sexploitation romp Switchblade Sisters (1975).

DEAD FEATHER MOON — Dead Feather Moon was formed in San Diego during the summer of 2008. Their first full-length record, Dark Sun, won 'Best Alternative Album' at the San Diego Music Awards in 2012. On the heels of several West Coast tours and showcases at South By Southwest, the band won 'Best Alternative Band' at the San Diego Music Awards in 2014.
Their second full-length record, ///// The Finder, was released digitally and on vinyl in July of 2016.

THE PRETTY FLOWERS — On their debut LP, Why Trains Crash, The Pretty Flowers continue in the tradition of bands like
Superchunk who blurred the lines between punk and indie rock. While the band is too “indie” for the studded belt crowd and a bit too gritty for the average indie rocker, they’ll be a welcome
respite for those who have little use for the boxes genres can create.

BAND APARTE — From down the end of Los Angeles, the bare bones gravepunk duo Band Aparte strips down and combines elements of gothic rock, synthpunk, and beachy lo-fi as macabre appreciation simmers in the gut of the city. Vocalist Brian Mendoza effortlessly channels Joy Division and Nick Cave, crooning into a death bouquet with his shirt unbuttoned. But he's not doing it to imitate Morrissey's aesthetic — Band Aparte's shows are fast and fierce, and the crowd works up a sweat at every venue they play.
