We all know that learning is more fun when you’re drinking with friends and colleagues. Thus, Nerd Nite is a monthly event held in more than 100 cities across the globe during which several folks give 20-minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along. It’s like the Discovery Channel…with beer.

PRESENTATION #1: Dinosaurs, Dragons, and Pokemon: The Power of Paleontology and Storytelling
by Gabriel Santos

Summary: Dinosaurs have a special place in the hearts of millions across the world! Since their discovery, these extinct and mostly mysterious creatures have inspired countless legends and stories. Even today, with movies like Jurassic Park and the Land Before Time, dinosaurs have become an iconic part of pop culture. But just how much do these prehistoric animals influence the way we tell stories?

Bio: Gabriel-Philip Santos is a nerd who somehow became a paleontologist. Born and raised in LA, Gabe spent his childhood either playing Star Wars or visiting the La Brea Tarpits. Today, Gabe spends his days as the collections manager and outreach coordinator for the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology in Claremont, California. He also is the co-founder of the Cosplay for Science initiative, which combines cosplay, storytelling, and science in the name of education.

PRESENTATION #2: Invasion of the Super Sloths
by Melissa Macias

Summary: Modern sloths have taken over pop culture. But millions of years ago, their larger (and definitely more badass) ancestors invaded Los Angeles. These majestic beasts roamed the land alongside mammoths, saber tooth cats, and all your other favorite Ice Age characters. This talk explores the 8-million-year history of sloths in Southern California, their evolution into movie monster-sized behemoths, and their tragic demise at the end of the Pleistocene.

Bio: Melissa spent her childhood running around the Southern Utah desert, collecting rocks and getting into trouble. A randomly chosen GE requirement course in college reignited her love for rocks and the dead things inside of them. Now she works as an urban paleontologist, running around construction sites and saving fossils from certain destruction. She’s also slightly obsessed with sloths.

PRESENTATION #3: Nerd Nite LA Sent a Paleontologist to See Jurassic World 2 and All You Get is This Drunken, Angry Presentation
by Trevor Valle

Summary: As the title says, we sacrificed sent our friendly, neighborhood paleontologist to review the science accuracy in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. 2 hours and 10 minutes of science-gone-awry distilled into 20 minutes of rage and beer drinking. There will be spoilers. Hold onto your butts.

Bio: When Trevor Valle isn't terrorizing beer halls as a Certified Cicerone, he can be found in the middle of nowhere digging up fossils of long dead animals or fighting people on Twitter. This is his [we lost count]-th presentation at Nerd Nite LA.
